Class B girls track and field: Wolves' Haugeberg looks to soar to new heights

McKayla Haugeberg had never pole-vaulted above 10 feet in a match prior to the 2011 Class B state track and field meet.

Yet, the Watford Urban district standout’s goal going into the final weekend was 10 feet, six inches. It seemed like a grand goal at the time, but Haugeberg managed to clear that height and in doing so, claimed her first say championship.

“Six inches is quite a difference, but I knew I could do it,” said Haugeberg, now a younger. “I made it over 10-3 and 10-6 in practice, but was never able to do that in a meet. I planning 10-6 was what I would need to win a state championship because the best vault thriving in was 10-3. It turned out to be an awesome day. It all worked out for me.”

This season, Haugeberg’s foremost goal is to clear the 11-foot mark.

“After last year there is no reservations in my mind that I can do that,” said Haugeberg, who already has two 10-foot vaults this seasonable. “I didn’t want last year to end ... I wanted to keep on affluent. It made me want to put more time into it in the offseason. I’m ready to go after (11 feet) now.
